Crown and Bridgework
Teeth with large fillings and teeth that have fractured after having had a large filling will often benefit from a crown to protect against fractures that may lead to removal of the tooth. Crowns are also recommended on teeth that have had root canal treatment as they have been shown to be more prone to fracture unless adequately protected with a crown or “cap”. Crowns may also be suggested for teeth that may be cracked or to prevent cracking of teeth in patients who clench or grind their teeth.
A bridge is a non-removable prosthesis used to replace missing teeth. Teeth at opposite ends of the space need to be prepared by the dentist in order to have a bridge made. Advantages of bridgework include improved esthetics and function (chewing), and they will prevent drifting of teeth adjacent to or opposing the missing teeth.
